Alcohol Rehab Treatment for Professionals
At Abbington House, we provide discreet, trauma-informed treatment for professionals whose drinking has become difficult to manage. Whether you’re a doctor, solicitor, business owner or senior manager, treatment here takes place in a small, private residential rehab centre in Hertfordshire — away from your workplace, your networks and the pressure to appear fine.

Why Professionals Struggle to Ask for Help
Being successful doesn’t make you immune to burnout, anxiety or addiction. High-achieving professionals often face pressures that make it harder to recognise when alcohol has become a problem — and harder still to reach out.
You’re used to coping and fixing things yourself. But when alcohol becomes the way you manage stress, unwind after long days or quiet a racing mind, it can spiral quickly and privately while still looking “functional” from the outside.
Many professionals delay seeking support because of:
- Fear of professional consequences or being “found out”
- The stigma of admitting you’re struggling
- Shame, especially when your identity is tied to being capable
- Worry that treatment will disrupt your responsibilities or business
The truth is that silence tends to make all of these worse, and confidential help does exist.
Confidentiality: What We Can Promise
Your privacy is protected here. We do not contact your employer, and nothing about your enquiry, admission or stay is shared with your workplace or professional networks. Who you tell, and when, is your decision.
Where it helps, we can also plan admission around your circumstances — including how time away is arranged and what, if anything, you choose to say about it.
Work, Disclosure andYour Rights
- We’re a treatment provider, not an employment adviser, so we won’t make promises about your legal position — but it’s worth understanding the honest picture before you decide what to tell your employer.
- There is no automatic legal protection from dismissal simply for disclosing that you’re seeking alcohol treatment. UK employment law is more nuanced than that: dependence on alcohol is not, by itself, classed as a disability under the Equality Act 2010,although related conditions such as depression or anxiety can be, and any dismissal must still follow a fair process. Many employers also have their own wellbeing or occupational health policies that treat someone seeking help far more favourably than someone whose difficulties surface another way.
- If your role is regulated — medicine, law, aviation, finance and others — your regulator may have its own expectations around health and disclosure, and these sit outside anything an employer or a treatment provider controls.
- None of this should put you off seeking treatment. It simply means disclosure is a personal decision worth making with proper advice: from your union, HR or occupational health, from Acas, or from an employment solicitor. What we can tell you from experience is that people who address a drinking problem early, on their own terms, are almost always in a stronger position — professionally and personally — than those who wait for it to surface on someone else’s.
Treatment Designed Around Your Life
Abbington House specialises in helping professionals who feel they can’t afford to stop — but can’t afford to keep going like this either.
Alcohol addiction doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Therapy here gently explores what sits underneath the drinking — burnout, performance anxiety, perfectionism, or older experiences that have never had room to be looked at.
If alcohol withdrawal is a concern, medically supervised detox is arranged as part of the residential stay, with clinical support available day and night.
We work around your life where we can. If needed, admission can be planned to minimise disruption to your responsibilities.
Treatment takes place in a residential centre for up to 21 people, where you are known personally rather than processed. Group work is small, and we aim to connect you with people who understand the pressures you’re carrying.
Professions We Often Support
We’ve worked with a wide range of professionals, including GPs, hospital consultants and NHS staff; solicitors, barristers and legal professionals; CEOs, entrepreneurs and founders; pilots, teachers and creatives; and people in finance and senior management.
What Recovery Looks Like After Treatment
Support doesn’t stop when your residential stay ends. You leave with:
02
Return-to-work planning
03
Lifetime access to the Abbington Community
Recovery means learning new ways to handle the stress of work and life, restoring clarity, and rebuilding trust in yourself — without alcohol holding the day together.
Is This the Right Time?
If you’re quietly searching “do I need rehab?” at your desk or while everyone else is asleep, that question is already telling you something.
We’re not here to shame you. We’re here to help you stop drinking in a way that works with your life, not against it. You don’t have to hit rock bottom to deserve help.
