What support looks like in Cambridgeshire
Cambridgeshire’s community drug and alcohol service is run by Change Grow Live (CGL), commissioned by Cambridgeshire County Council. It offers assessment, harm reduction, one-to-one support, substitute prescribing, group work and peer-led recovery, with hubs across the county including its recovery hub on Mill Road in Cambridge. There is also a strong community-led recovery network locally, including the EDGE Café, a social enterprise run by people in recovery themselves.
For many people, particularly earlier on or where recovery still feels manageable at home, community treatment works well and is often the right first step. If you have not yet spoken to anyone locally, CGL is a sensible place to begin.
Residential rehab is different. It involves stepping away from day-to-day life for a period of live-in treatment, and NHS-funded residential placements are limited and usually require assessment through community services such as CGL first.
That is often the point at which people begin considering private treatment.

What treatment involves
Abbington House provides residential treatment for drug addiction, alcohol addiction and dual diagnosis, delivered at our centre. Treatment is live-in, built around a minimum 28-day stay, with medically supervised detox where needed and care that continues beyond discharge through aftercare and family support.

Travelling to our centre from Cambridgeshire
Our centre is usually reached from Cambridgeshire via the A1(M), A10 or A505, depending on where someone is travelling from. Journey times are shortest from the south of the county.

- Cambourne: around 40 to 50 minutes
- Cambridge: around 45 to 55 minutes

Treatment takes place at our centre, but families do not need to travel for every part of it. Family support runs online over sixteen weeks, so the people closest to someone can stay involved from Cambridgeshire during the stay and after treatment ends.
