Choosing a rehab is one of the most important decisions you or your family will ever make, and it almost always happens under pressure. You’ve probably been scanning websites that all say the same thing: “compassionate care”, “holistic approach”, “luxury setting.” None of that tells you whether the treatment they offer actually fits your needs, who the staff are, or what happens day-to-day.

Most people reading this are trying to decide whether private rehab is the right step and, if it is, how to choose a place that’s genuinely capable of supporting long-term recovery.

We know what it feels like to be in this situation, so we wanted to take you through what actually matters, the questions that are worth asking, and the things that separate solid treatment from places that market well.

Many of us at Abbington have worked in this industry for years and have been through treatment ourselves, so we know what a good rehab looks like and what to watch for.

Start With Safety, Not Aesthetics

A beautiful building means nothing if the clinical care behind it is thin.

Before you look at photos of gardens and en-suites, check whether the rehab is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Every residential rehab in England must hold a CQC registration. It isn’t optional, and it isn’t something a centre can work around.

Be sure to read their inspection report, because it gives a more honest picture than a brochure, including where improvements have been identified. It’s reasonable to ask how the service has responded to any issues raised.

You can also ask whether the centre has had any enforcement actions or safeguarding incidents. A well-run rehab will be open about this. Evasiveness should concern you.

At Abbington House, our CQC Provider ID is 1-17917671768. We’re happy to talk through what our inspections found and how we work.

Ask About Staff  Specifically

“Experienced, compassionate team” is on almost every rehab website, but it doesn’t tell you anything useful.

Here’s what you should ask:

What is the staff-to-client ratio?

A larger centre with dozens of residents cannot offer the same level of attention as a smaller setting. We work with a maximum of 24 residents at any time so that each person is known, not just managed.

Are therapists qualified and accredited?

Look for accreditation with bodies like BACP or UKCP. Ask whether there is medical oversight, especially if withdrawal, medication or mental health are part of the picture.

Does anyone on the team have lived experience of recovery?

This isn’t essential for every role, but it changes the environment. Support feels more real when it comes from someone who’s been through the same process.

Does the rehab treat mental health alongside addiction?

This is where many centres fall short and it matters more than almost anything else on this page.

Addiction rarely exists on its own. Many people struggle with depression, anxiety, trauma, ADHD and other conditions alongside it. If a rehab only focuses on substance use without addressing what sits underneath it, progress is often short-lived.

Ask directly: Do you offer dual diagnosis treatment? Then ask what that actually looks like. Some centres mention it, but don’t have the clinical structure to support it.

At Abbington House, dual diagnosis is central to how we work.

Treatment plans need to reflect the full picture from the beginning, rather than treating addiction in isolation and hoping everything else improves later.

We’ve also written about ADHD and addiction because it’s something we personally live with in recovery, and something still misunderstood in many settings.

What Does a Day Actually Look Like?

Structure matters in rehab because recovery isn’t something that happens around the edges of the day; it’s what fills your time there. Everything takes place in an environment designed to support change.

When you ask what a typical day involves, you’re looking for balance.

Be cautious of centres that are vague about their schedule, or where large parts of the day are unstructured.

A strong programme should include a mix of evidence-based therapies alongside group work and one-to-one sessions. If most of a stay is downtime, you’re paying for accommodation rather than treatment.

Check the Reviews, But Read Them Properly

Reviews can be helpful, but only if you read them carefully.

Look for details. Do people describe how they were treated? Do they mention specific staff members? Do they talk about what changed for them?

Generic praise doesn’t tell you much but specific experiences do.

Check independent platforms like Google and Doctify, not just the centre’s own website.

At Abbington House, we have over 85 Google reviews where people describe their experience in detail. We also share recovery success stories in people’s own words.

Understand What’s Included in the Cost

Cost matters and it isn’t always presented clearly.

Some centres quote a base price and then charge extra for core elements like detox, psychiatric input, or one-to-one therapy.

Ask clearly what is included and what isn’t.

Specifically check:

  • Medical detox
  • Psychiatric assessment
  • One-to-one therapy
  • Family support
  • Aftercare

At Abbington House, our residential rehab costs cover the full programme.

What Happens After You Leave?

This is one of the most important questions and one of the most overlooked.

Rehab is a starting point, not an endpoint. What happens after discharge often determines whether progress continues.

Ask what aftercare is included and for how long.

At Abbington House, aftercare runs for a year following discharge. We also offer a family support programme.

When Private Residential Rehab Is the Right Step

Private rehab isn’t always the first step, but there are situations where it becomes the most effective one.

This is often the case when:

  • Attempts to stop at home haven’t worked
  • Withdrawal symptoms make stopping unsafe
  • The environment is making change harder
  • Mental health needs to be addressed alongside addiction
  • A structured setting is needed

In these situations, a residential programme creates space and stability.

Visit Before You Commit

If possible, visit before making a decision.

A website can’t show you how a place feels. When you visit, you get a sense of the environment, the team and whether it feels right. We understand that time is a factor when trying to find treatment, so this isn’t always an option for everyone.

At Abbington House, you can arrange a visit to our centre.

Red Flags to Watch For

Not every rehab operates well. These are warning signs worth paying attention to:

  • Pressure to commit quickly
  • No assessment before admission
  • Vague answers about staff or qualifications
  • No CQC registration
  • Detox offered without therapy

A Summary of What to Ask

  1. Are you CQC registered?
  2. What is your staff-to-client ratio?
  3. Are your therapists accredited?
  4. Is there medical oversight?
  5. How do you assess suitability?
  6. Do you treat mental health alongside addiction?
  7. What does a typical day look like?
  8. What therapies are included?
  9. What is included in the cost?
  10. What aftercare do you offer?
  11. Can I visit?
  12. What happens if someone relapses?
