Treatment Philosophy
At Abbington House, our treatment philosophy is the foundation of everything we do. We believe that addiction is never just about substances. It is about pain. About unmet needs. About trauma that the brain learned to soothe in the only way it knew how.
We don’t follow a one-size-fits-all approach to rehab at Abbington House. Here, you’ll find an environment that is different, one where the focus is not simply on “getting you sober,” but on helping you truly heal and transform.
Core Values That Guide Us
Person-Centred

Person-Centred
You are more than just an "addict." You are a person that deserves support. At Abbington House, you are seen as a whole human with a complex history, unique strengths, and a story that matters. Your treatment is built around you, not around labels or stereotypes.
Compassion-First
Shame doesn’t heal addiction. Compassion does. Here, you will be met with kindness, empathy and non-judgment, no matter where you are in your journey or what you’ve been through.
Evidence-Based

Evidence-Based
While compassion is at the heart of our approach, we also ground everything we do in clinical best practice. We use therapies that are supported by research, such as trauma therapy, CBT, DBT skills, EMDR, psychoeducation and holistic practices.
Neurodivergent-Aware
We understand that many people who seek help for addiction are also living with ADHD, autism or other neurodivergences. We actively support neurodivergent clients by offering flexible, sensory-considerate approaches and by adapting communication and routines to meet your individual needs.
Trauma-Informed

Trauma-Informed
For so many people who struggle with addiction, trauma is the missing piece of the puzzle. That’s why our staff are trained in trauma-informed care. We aim to create an environment where you can feel safe, heard, and empowered.
Inclusive and Non-Judgmental
Abbington House is a place where all identities are respected. We welcome clients of all genders, sexualities, cultural backgrounds and belief systems.
How We Integrate 12-Step Principals
Many clients ask us: "Is Abbington House a 12-Step rehab?"
The honest answer is: we integrate the principles of the 12 Steps within a modern, flexible treatment model, one that respects each client’s personal beliefs and preferences. We present these concepts in an inclusive, accessible way, without requiring clients to adopt any particular worldview or dogma. We adapt the language of the Steps when needed to support different belief systems, and we offer space for clients to explore what resonates for them.
Meeting People Where They Are
Some of our clients arrive having years of experience in 12-Step programmes. Others are completely new to the idea. At Abbington House, there is no “one right way” you must follow. We meet you where you are, and help you explore what will serve your long-term recovery.
A Place Where You Are Safe To Heal
Recovery cannot happen when a person is bracing themselves for shame, judgment, or control. That’s why everything about Abbington House, from the way staff interact, to the environment we cultivate, is designed to promote genuine safety.
Physical and Emotional Safety
Our residence is calm, warm, and designed to feel like a home. Staff are trauma-trained, and every interaction is guided by respect and attunement to your needs.
Consent-Based, Non-Coercive Care
We believe that recovery only works when it is chosen, not forced. Every aspect of treatment, from therapy to group participation, is done with your consent and collaboration. You have the right to understand, question, and shape your own treatment experience.
Respecting Autonomy and Choice
We trust our clients as capable adults. Our role is to provide structure, support, and therapeutic challenge, not to control or infantilise you.
Individualised Treatment, Never One-Size-Fits-All
Every person who walks through our doors arrives with a different story, different life experiences, different patterns of substance use, different strengths and struggles. That’s why we do not believe in rigid treatment paths. At Abbington House, treatment is:
- Tailored: built around your specific needs, goals, and preferences
- Flexible: evolves as you progress through treatment
- Collaborative: designed with your active input. From your very first assessment, we take time to understand who you are as a person, not just a set of symptoms.
- Personalised Treatment Planning: Together with your primary therapist and the clinical team, you’ll create a bespoke treatment plan that draws from:
- Trauma-informed therapy (including EMDR, somatic approaches, IFS-inspired work)
- Evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
- 12-Step–integrated support where relevant
- Relapse prevention and coping skills
- Holistic therapies (yoga, mindfulness, nutrition, creative work)
- Family and relationship support
Your treatment plan is not static, we continually review it with you and adjust as your needs shift throughout your stay.
Empowering Self-Directed Recovery
We do not believe in rigidly enforcing one recovery path. Instead, we help you:
- Explore different tools and philosophies
- Reflect on what resonates for you
- Develop a personal, adaptable recovery toolkit
- Build the confidence to navigate life beyond treatment
Self-efficacy, the belief that you can direct your recovery, is one of the most powerful predictors of long-term success. We design our entire programme to foster this inner strength.
Building Recovery for the Real World
Treatment is important. But what matters most is what happens when you leave.
Too often, people feel safe in a rehab bubble but struggle to translate recovery into daily life.
That’s why at Abbington House, everything we do is geared toward:
- Building practical tools
- Strengthening resilience
- Preparing for the realities of life after treatment
Focus Areas for Real-World Recovery
- Relapse prevention: understanding triggers, cravings, and coping strategies
- Emotional regulation: tools for managing stress, relationships, life events
- Life skills: boundaries, communication, self-care, decision making
- Social connection: building supportive networks and healthy community
- Ongoing support: creating a sustainable plan for aftercare and continued growth
Our therapists work with you to identify risks unique to your life context, whether that’s work stress, complex family dynamics, neurodivergent burnout, grief, or other challenges, and tailor support accordingly.
12-Step–Integrated Life Tools
Where it’s appropriate and helpful for you, we also introduce 12-step tools that can serve as an anchor after treatment.
This might include:
- Building a personal connection to step work
- Learning how to engage with 12-step meetings
- Understanding sponsorship and community support
- Using step principles (honesty, accountability, service) in everyday life
Clients are supported to explore other frameworks as well, such as SMART Recovery, mindfulness-based approaches, and trauma-specific aftercare, to build a recovery lifestyle that truly fits.
If You Are Considering Abbington House
You do not have to be certain. You do not have to feel “ready” or “strong.”
If you are reading this, you are already doing something brave: exploring options. We will meet you where you are. If you would like to have an informal, no-pressure chat, you can:
- Call us — you’ll speak directly to someone who understands addiction and recovery
- Email us — if you need time to put your thoughts into words
- Visit us — if it helps to see the location and meet the team
Whatever you choose, know this: recovery is possible, and it does not have to look like anyone else’s version.
At Abbington House, we believe that recovery is not about fixing a broken person. It is about helping a person rediscover their strength, value, and wholeness. And that is what we are here to do.
