Abbington House accepts referrals from GPs, psychiatrists, therapists, EAP providers, and other healthcare professionals. This page explains what information to provide, who to contact, and what happens next. Referrals relate to our private residential rehab programme in Hertfordshire.
Who We Accept Referrals From
We welcome referrals from healthcare and support professionals working with someone whose alcohol or drug use may require residential treatment. This includes:
- GPs and primary care practitioners
- Psychiatrists and mental health clinicians
- Private therapists and counsellors
- Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) providers
- Social workers and community support teams
- Occupational health practitioners.
Funding
Abbington House currently accepts privately paying clients only. We’re not able to process NHS-funded or local authority-funded referrals. If funding is being arranged by an employer or through an EAP, our admissions team can discuss the process directly.
Consent and Pre-Referral Conversations
Before submitting a formal referral, please ensure the client has given informed consent for their clinical information to be shared with Abbington House. This is required before any clinical information is shared.
Where a client is uncertain about treatment or not yet ready to commit, we’re happy to have an informal conversation with the referring professional before a formal referral is submitted. This allows you to understand whether Abbington House is likely to be a suitable fit without starting a formal data-sharing process prematurely. These conversations are confidential and carry no obligation on either side.
Once consent is in place, please send a brief clinical overview to admissions@abbingtonhouse.clinic, including:
- A clinical summary of the presenting situation
- Current medications and dosages
- Relevant psychiatric or medical history, where known
- Any risk factors or contraindications you consider relevant.
A formal GP letter is helpful but not required to begin the admissions conversation. If you’re unsure what to include, contact us directly, and we can guide you through what is needed.
Clinical information submitted as part of a referral is handled in accordance with our privacy policy and UK GDPR requirements.
What Happens Next
We aim to respond to all professional referrals within 48 hours. For straightforward cases, we can usually confirm within that timeframe whether admission is appropriate. Where the clinical picture is more complex, we will discuss the case with our doctor before confirming whether Abbington House is the right fit.
We assess each case individually. Where a referral involves a complex presentation, we will have an honest conversation about whether our programme is the right environment for the client at that time.
We will communicate directly with the referring professional throughout the admissions process, and we are happy to answer clinical questions before a formal referral is submitted.
Who We Typically Support
Abbington House provides residential treatment for alcohol addiction, drug addiction and dual diagnosis, where addiction exists alongside a mental health condition such as anxiety, depression, PTSD or ADHD. Our programme is trauma-informed and specifically equipped to support neurodivergent clients, including those with ADHD.
We treat a maximum of 24 residents at any one time. That allows for close, consistent clinical support and is often an important factor when considering whether the environment is the right fit for a client.
Medically supervised detox is available within the residential programme for clients with physical dependency on alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines.
