Coming to Abbington House from London
Abbington House is based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, north of London and directly connected to the city by rail. People come to us from across London, particularly North London and areas with a straightforward route out by train, the A1(M) or the M25.
For many people, leaving London is part of what makes treatment possible. Stepping out of the city, away from the pace, pressure and places tied to drinking or drug use, can create separation that is hard to find at home. For others, staying close enough to reach family or return for practical reasons matters. There is no right distance. What matters is whether the setting gives the person enough space and structure to begin.
Why people travel from London for treatment
Travelling for treatment is not always about going far away. Sometimes it is about creating a pause. In London, the people, places, routines and pressures tied to alcohol or drug use can be close at hand and hard to step back from. A short distance out of the city can make that separation easier.
For families, distance can also bring a different kind of steadiness. The person is not far from home, but treatment is taking place somewhere contained, with support around them and a clear structure to the day.
Abbington House is close enough to London for admission to be practical, while still giving the person real separation from daily life in the city.
