Wellness and Recovery Beyond Therapy
At Abbington House, we believe recovery is about more than stopping substance use, it’s about creating a healthier, more balanced way of living. That’s why we integrate a range of wellness-focused activities into our treatment programme, giving clients the chance to rebuild physical strength, explore creativity and discover new ways to relax and connect.
From structured exercise sessions to mindful practices and creative outlets, each activity is designed to support recovery in a different way. Physical movement helps restore energy and confidence, while mindfulness techniques reduce stress and improve focus. Creative and social activities give clients new tools for expression and connection without turning to substances.
These activities aren’t just optional extras, they’re actually a core part of how we help people stay grounded and motivated during treatment, while laying the foundation for long-term wellbeing.
Physical Wellness Activities

Physical Wellness Activities
Building strength and reconnecting with your body is an important part of recovery. At Abbington House, we provide regular opportunities to get active in a safe, supportive environment, whether that’s through structured exercise or gentle movement.
- Gym and Free Weights (Wednesdays and Saturdays): Clients can visit the gym to help them focus on building strength, improving fitness and boosting confidence. Exercise can be a powerful outlet for stress and helps support both physical and mental health.
- Boxing (Wednesdays and Saturdays): A popular choice for many, boxing sessions provide a healthy way to release tension, build resilience, and develop discipline. It’s an energising, structured activity that promotes focus and self-control. (Wednesdays and Saturdays)
- Swimming (Mondays): Swimming offers a low-impact, restorative way to exercise. Whether used for relaxation or fitness, it’s a calming activity that supports both body and mind.
- Walks (Tuesdays & Thursdays): Time outdoors is essential for recovery. Our group walks provide a chance to enjoy fresh air in a supportive, social setting.
We believe these activities help clients feel stronger, healthier and more grounded as they progress through treatment.
Creative and Fun Activities
Recovery involves breaking unhealthy habits and finding new ways to express yourself, connect with others and enjoy life. At Abbington House, we offer a range of creative and social activities that help clients explore different sides of themselves in a safe, supportive environment.
Art Therapy (Wednesdays)
Guided by experienced facilitators, art therapy allows clients to explore emotions and experiences through creativity. For many, it provides a way to express feelings that can be hard to put into words.
Games Night (Saturdays)
A highlight of the week, games night gives clients the chance to relax, laugh and connect with peers in a substance-free setting. Building social bonds in recovery is vital, and games night helps foster a sense of community and belonging. These activities encourage self-expression, strengthen emotional wellbeing and remind clients that recovery can include fun, lightness and joy.
